The title of Dorrington is a reference to the Northumbrian town of Doddington, and the mysterious setting played here can be found in the William Dixon manuscript, which is thought to be the oldest collection of bagpipe music in existence. The tune was once famous as the "signature tune" of the Allan pipers Will and his son Jamie, who played and travelled in Northumberland and the Scottish borders during the 1700s. The tune was played by “old Wull” Allan on his deathbed in defiance at his neighbours requests for him to repent - “Psha! Gie me my pipes, and I’ll play ye Dorrington Lads yet!”, and in this recording we imagine sharing old Wull’s own experience of that final performance. The whole story of Dorrington can be found, along with all of the music from the William Dixon MS, in Matt Seattle’s book The Master Piper.
